The role of academic counselors in higher education is constantly expanding to meet the needs of a growingly diverse set of student populations. The results of a study published in Nature Biotechnology reveal how graduate students are more than six times as likely to experience anxiety and depression as compared to the general population. In this session, we will showcase how several campuses across the UC system have found new and innovative ways to help graduate students better manage the unique stressors inherent in graduate pursuits. Through the creation of new and innovative graduate specialist positions (clinical and non-clinical), engaged in daily prevention and early academic intervention efforts, the UC system is taking a more targeted approach and informed response to the mental health crisis in graduate education.
