Dr. Evelyn Vázquez

Evelyn Vázquez, Ph.D., M.S., (pronouns she, her, ella), was born in Guerrero, México. She is the firstborn daughter of a teenage single mother and is the first in her family to attend college.

Dr. Vázquez is an Assistant Researcher in the Department of Social Medicine, Population, and Public Health at the School of Medicine, University of California, Riverside. Her scholarship focuses on interrogating structural and social factors that harm the health and quality of life of historically marginalized communities, including racial and ethnic minorities, sexual and gender minority populations, low-income, immigrants, and first-generation college students.

Dr. Vázquez is the founder of Healing the Academy and leads “The Engaging the Academy Project”, an engagement award funded by The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). The long-term objective of the “Engaging the academy” project is to increase the capacity of graduate and professional students, faculty, staff, on- and off-campus healthcare providers, and university administrators to engage in patient-centered outcomes research and/or comparative effectiveness research (PCOR/CER) to improve the mental health of graduate and professional students from historically marginalized backgrounds. The Engaging the Academy aims to collaborate with diverse stakeholders affiliated with UC campuses recognized as Hispanic-serving Institutions, including UC Riverside, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, UC Merced, and UC Santa Cruz.

Dr. Vázquez is the 2023 receipt of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Award from the Association of Recovery in Higher Education and is a selected scholar in the 2023 UCLA LIFT-UP (Levering Institutional support For Talent, Underrepresented Physicians and/or Scientists) program funded by NIH/NIDDK.

Dr. Vázquez is the assistant director of the HABLAMoS (Hispanic And Bilingual Ambulatory Medical Studies) program. HABLAMoS is a designated Emphasis (DE) in Medical Spanish at the University of California, Riverside (UCR).
